Germany has expanded its annual visa quota for skilled Indian workers, raising it from 20,000 to 90,000—a 350% increase—announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Here’s everything you need to know about this opportunity.

New Visa Quota for Indian Skilled Workers

During PM Modi’s recent three-day visit to Germany, Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Modi agreed to boost trade cooperation and expand workforce mobility. Under this updated policy, Germany will now issue 90,000 visas each year to qualified Indian professionals, up from the previous limit of 20,000.

Focus on Skilled Workers Only

Chancellor Scholz clarified that this increase targets skilled professionals only, aiming to limit migration for unskilled roles. This measure ensures Germany’s workforce benefits from specialized talent aligned with its economic needs.

Indian Students Lead in German Universities

India remains Germany’s top source of international students, and the past year saw a rise of 23,000 Indian professionals in the German job market. “We welcome Indian talent into our labor force,” Scholz stated at the 18th Asia-Pacific Conference of German Business in 2024.

Simplified Visa Process with Digital Tools

Scholz also announced plans to streamline the visa process, leveraging digital tools and faster processing to simplify applications. This higher visa cap not only opens doors for Indian professionals and students but also strengthens cultural and economic ties between India and Germany, fostering collaboration across various industries.
