As the anticipation builds for the Rio de Janeiro Carnival 2024 and an increase in visitor numbers is expected, Brazil has decided to postpone the entry visa requirement to a later date in April.

Until April 10th, travelers from Australia, Canada, and the US can now visit Brazil without the need for a visa. This decision comes after the country initially waived visa requirements for these nations in 2019 and had planned to reinstate them after a five-year period.

Additionally, this will provide the Brazilian government with extra time to introduce a new electronic visa system. According to a statement from the tourism board to Skift, a travel intelligence media company, the delay will also support an increase in tourist arrivals during the peak season.

“The extension aims to finalize the implementation of the E-Visa requirement system and ensure a smooth flow of tourists from these countries to Brazil during the peak season,” stated the tourism board in a communication to Skift.

Prior to 2019, travelers from the U.S., Canada, and Australia were required to apply for a travel visa when visiting Brazil. In 2019, former president Jair Bolsonaro eliminated this requirement as part of an effort to stimulate the tourism sector. Since then, individuals from the mentioned countries have been allowed to stay in Brazil for a period of 90 days, with the option to extend their stay up to 180 days.
