Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced on Tuesday that starting from March, both Thailand and China will implement a permanent visa exemption for each other’s citizens.

In September, Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy, heavily dependent on tourism, lifted entry requirements for Chinese tourists until February of the following year.

“This will enhance the ties between the two nations,” Srettha conveyed to reporters.

Government data for the year 2023 revealed that Thailand exceeded its target by welcoming 28 million foreign tourists. This influx generated revenue of 1.2 trillion baht ($34.93 billion).

The primary contributor to this figure was Malaysia, accounting for 4.5 million visitors, followed by China with 3.5 million arrivals.

In contrast to the pre-COVID record of 39 million arrivals, which included 11 million visitors from China.
