As visa challenges continue to mount in traditional study destinations like the US, UK, Australia, and Canada collectively known as the ‘Big 4’ Indian students are increasingly setting their sights on more accessible and cost-effective countries like Germany and Ireland. These European nations are emerging as new global education hotspots, offering a balanced mix of affordability, supportive visa policies, and genuine career prospects.

Germany, in particular, has climbed the ranks to become the fourth most preferred study destination for Indian students. Enrollments have consistently grown over the last five years, especially among students from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. According to Sachin Jain, Country Manager at ETS India & South Asia, Germany’s public universities, known for low or no tuition fees, combined with a robust STEM education ecosystem and an 18-month post-study work visa, are major attractions. Clear residency pathways and a growing demand for skilled professionals in fields like AI, tech, and engineering further enhance Germany’s appeal.

Ireland has seen even more rapid growth. During the 2023–24 academic year, India became the top source of international students in the country, with a nearly 50% jump in enrollments in just 12 months. Indian families are increasingly choosing Ireland for its English-language programs, strong ties to global industries, and favorable visa regulations, especially in contrast to recent restrictions imposed by Canada and the UK.

Jain also noted, “TOEFL scores submitted by Indian students show a clear pattern 85% of them secured student visas. This reflects not only their English proficiency but also their academic readiness and seriousness about studying abroad.” With TOEFL scores widely accepted across universities in Germany and Ireland, the pathway to higher education remains open and promising for Indian students.

According to ETS, Indian students are no longer just chasing degrees they’re seeking long-term value. They want educational systems that reward merit, offer strong returns on investment, and present clear post-study work and settlement opportunities.

This growing trend also aligns with the Indian government’s National Education Policy (NEP), which promotes internationalization and encourages students to make well-informed, research-based decisions about their education abroad.

Ultimately, Germany and Ireland are proving that with the right combination of affordability, access, and career-focused outcomes, they can confidently earn the trust of a new generation of globally ambitious Indian students.
